2005 Lane County High School Manufacturing Competition

The winners of the 1st Annual Lane County High School Manufacturing Competition were presented with gift certificates to Jerry's Home Improvement Friday Night May 20th at the Gateway Mall in Springfield.

Seven teams of high school students from four high schools showcased their best projects at the Gateway Mall to a panel of judges from manufacturing companies including Country Coach Inc. and Farwest Steel. Each project was scored in several categories including a presentation from the students. Once each judge had visited all the entries, the scores were tallied and awards were presented.

The First Place award, and a $75 gift certificate to each team member, was presented to North Eugene Manufacturing Company (NEMCO) for their Metal Garden Bench. Second Place, and a $50 gift certificate, was presented to Daniel Vinje of Springfield High School for his Telephone Stand. The $25 gift certificate for third place was presented to Rena Calhoon, a student from North Eugene High School for her wooden tool chest.

Students displayed their projects to the public Friday night and from 9am-4pm on Saturday. Tickets were handed to interested people to cast a vote for their favorite projects. Over 200 people voted and the winner of the People's Choice Award went to North Eugene and their mixer prototype. The People's Choice Award winning team was given a $100 gift certificate from Jerry's for its school's program.

This competition is another event presented by the Lane Education Service District to promote connections between businesses and students and showcase the outstanding skills students are achieving in Lane County High Schools. "The quality of work is a direct reflection on the schools and teachers that offer these professional and technical programs," states event coordinator Mark Wreath. "The Lane County High School Manufacturing Competition will be an annual event to showcase student projects."
