Youth Career Fair brings together
businesses and students

"Great job!"

"Well organized! The large scale displays were a very nice visual this year."

"It was a good experience. I learned how to better prepare myself."

Those are just a few responses to the 2007 Lane County Youth Career Fair, which was held at the Lane Events Center on February 13th. High school students, community volunteers, and representatives from local business and industry joined together for a day of learning and sharing about career opportunities in Lane County.

One of the best ways to help students find a satisfying career is for them to interact with business leaders and other professionals who have already overcome barriers to succeed in their chosen fields. At the event students learned about career paths, participated in self-awareness workshops and mock interviews. "I truly learned from this and hope it will help me in my professional career." said one student.

"I have been participating for a couple of years now and the students were better prepared than ever. They seemed more engaged and asked great questions about careers in my company. I am very impressed with how well prepared some students are." shared one human resource specialist. Many mock interviewers echoed these sentiments and said they would have no problems hiring some students immediately. "I get fired up about our future workforce at this event!" said another local business partner.

Businesses and agencies support the Youth Career Fair through sponsorship or booth fees. This year event sponsors were asked to bring larger visual displays and they responded enthusiastically. The RV Consortium brought a luxurious Marathon Coach; Comcast brought a "tricked out" van; military branches brought large dynamic displays (including a rock climbing wall!); the Eugene Fire Department and the Springfield Police Department brought their service vehicles; and Peterson Machinery and the LCC Diesel Program joined forces to bring a tractor trailer with a new Caterpillar on board.

A HUGE "thank you" to all who attended, participated, volunteered, and supported this year’s event. Mark your calendars so we see you again next year on February 12th!
